Are you finding it difficult to get everything together for the big jolly man in the red coat’s big day? Need a few hints and tips on present to make their day but are stuck with what to buy.
First up is something that any foodie especially the foodie man in your life will love. Qwerkity have a fabulous kit called the Boozy Woozy Beer Mustard Making Kit. For £21.99 you receive a box with 4 small jars, powder, mustard seed, sugar, sea salt and spices, so all you have to add is the beer of your choice.
Andy didn’t want to use lager as he didn’t know how well that would turn out being as light as it is so he popped out and bought a bottle of “Bishops Finger” as it’s one of his favourite craft beers, has a distinctive flavour and was curious to see how it would turn out as a mustard.
It’s really easy to make. You start with pouring the mustard seed, vinegar and beer into the bowl with the beer and leaving it soaking for 48 hours, covered with cling film, somewhere warm. After 48 hours you mix it up, add the rest of the ingredients then pop it into the 4 small jars. Then pop it in the fridge for the next week. Once you’ve had it in the fridge for a week it separates slightly so we mixed it up again when we wanted to use it as if you don’t it’s quite bitter. Mix it up again in the jar and you have the most amazing whole grain mustard to use. Perfect for presents, or just to use over the new year. It’s one of those presents that you could buy again and by using a completely different beer, get a different flavour. The experimentation is limitless.
If they don’t like beer but have more of a love of whisky, then Qwerkity also have a Feeling Frisky Whisky Mustard Making Kit
which is the same principle yet their favourite whisky is the star of the show.
Now we have seen tonnes of light boxes on offer this year, but as much as I like them, they are quite difficult to put a message up unless you’ve got half and hour as you have to slide each letter in one by one. However, if you still fancy getting a message board, then this one has got to be the top of your list.
The Framed Letter Board from Red Candy makes it really easy to present a message as the letters just slot into place without the need of fiddling and sliding with a thin piece of plastic. OK it doesn’t light up which seems to be the appeal for some people, but it doesn’t look out of place in a kitchen as it’s very much like a 1970s cafe board or school canteen board. Bit of retro for the man you love?
Finally an item that was literally made for my OH. The Sofa Butler from Gifts.co.uk has been one of the best things I could have received for Andy. He does have a small table by the side of his chair but he has a habit of putting things on the arm of the chair, only to knock them straight off when he or the dogs get up to sit on him. Keys, wallet, money, his glasses and his diary all tend to get sprawled all over the floor and normally half gets stolen by Pea (our spaniel) who thinks it’s hilarious to hide things you drop. So something had to be done!
The Sofa Butler “James” is a lovely sturdy tray for just £29.99 that you clamp to the arm of your chair. A large arm pulls out from underneath the tray and that slides down the outer side of the arm then springs back to hug the arm, and keeps whatever you have on the tray nice and tidy (and more importantly keeps everything off the floor). It’s really easy to clean since you can wash it over with either a baby wipe, or take it into the kitchen and rinse it clean, plus it keeps your drinks sturdy with it’s none slip rubber top.
There is also an amazing bedside version which only works if you have a sunken mattress, but if it’s like the armchair version will be well worth the money for the peace of mind. You won’t even need a bedside cabinet if you have this fabulous item, plus, it’s easy to fold back down again and give you the room back. Genius.
